On 25 May 2018, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into effect across all 28 EU member states. This regulation obligates businesses to protect the personal data and privacy of all parties with which it interacts, with non-compliance leaving offenders subject to heavy fines.
What do businesses need to know about General Data Protection Regulation?
GDPR intends to make people’s sensitive data more secure than ever, meaning that any organisation which holds data about customers, clients, suppliers, etc. will probably need to implement new policies to ensure that they are compliant with the new regulations. For instance, organisations will need to protect customers’ IP addresses and cookie data to the same level as they would their name and address.
Under GDPR rules, companies are required to protect the privacy and personal data of EU citizens for transactions made within EU states, along with any personal data exported outside the EU. As GDPR applies across every EU state, some companies may need to invest substantially to bring themselves up to the compliance standards set out by the new regulations. As of 25 May 2018, companies are required to demonstrate compliance with GDPR.
